Customer Service
Is it true you have the best customer service in the industry?
Absolutely. Call us and you’ll get a real human — not a robot, not a maze of phone menus. (Unless you call after hours or we’re on the other line… in which case we’re probably walking our dogs or eating tacos — because we live in San Diego, of course 😉.)
We’re a small, knowledgeable team that actually uses and builds with these cases, so you’ll get real recommendations, not a script. Try us once and you’ll see why customers stick with us for years.
Case Sizing & Fit
How do I choose the right case size?
Start with the interior dimensions, not the exterior. Measure your gear at the widest and tallest points — including anything that sticks out like knobs, handles, antennas, lenses, tripod feet, or mounting brackets.
Then build in clearance for protection:
- Add about 1 inch of foam around the sides of your gear.
- Make sure total interior depth (lid + base) covers your gear height plus foam above/below.
- If your layout is tight, consider a custom foam insert for a perfect fit.
If you’re between sizes, we usually recommend sizing up one model so you don’t outgrow the case. Want us to sanity-check your fit? Send measurements or a quick photo through Contact Us.
And if you’re between sizes, don’t worry — we won’t judge. It happens to the best of us.
What's the difference between interior and exterior dimensions?
Interior dimensions are the usable space where your gear and foam sit. Exterior dimensions include wall thickness, corners, handles, latches, wheels, and other molded features. Two cases can look similar on the outside but have different interior room — so always shop by interior size.
Do interior dimensions include lid depth?
Yes. The listed interior depth is the total: lid depth + base depth. If you’re storing tall items, check both lid and base depth on the product page to be sure the foam won’t press too hard.
What if my gear is an odd shape?
For irregular or delicate items, leave extra clearance (at least 1" of foam around the widest parts). If you have multiple pieces, cables, or odd shapes that need a secure layout, a custom foam insert is the best way to prevent shifting and impact damage.
Send us your gear list + measurements + photos and we’ll recommend the right case and layout: Contact Us.
Do you carry airline carry-on sized cases?
Yes — we carry several carry-on friendly models. Each airline has slightly different size limits, especially with wheels/handles, so if you want a safe recommendation, tell us your airline and route and we’ll point you to the best options.
Foam & Custom Inserts
What foam options do you offer?
We stock a full range of foam solutions so you can go DIY simple or full precision:
- Pick-and-pluck (pre-scored) foam sets
- Solid foam sheets for custom cutting
- Layered foam for stacking or multi-level protection
- Precision-cut custom foam inserts (Browse custom foam)
If you tell us what you’re protecting, we’ll help you choose the best foam type for your use.
What is pick-and-pluck foam?
Pick-and-pluck foam is pre-scored into small cubes so you can pull sections out by hand. It’s perfect for simpler shapes and quick DIY protection without needing tools.
We recommend tracing your gear first, removing foam slowly, and test-fitting as you go so you don’t over-pluck.
It’s surprisingly satisfying — like bubble wrap, but with a purpose.
When should I choose a custom foam insert?
Choose a custom foam insert when protection and presentation really matter. It’s ideal for:
- Complex layouts (multiple items, odd shapes, layered gear)
- High-value or fragile equipment (optics, drones, medical devices, instruments)
- Repeatable professional setups (field kits, demos, deployments)
- Maximum impact and vibration protection
Custom foam inserts are cut to match your gear exactly, so everything sits snug, secure, and looks clean when opened. For a quote, send your gear list and measurements here: Contact Us.
Can I replace my foam later?
Yes. Foam naturally compresses and wears out over time depending on use, storage, and exposure. You can order replacement foam sets or upgrade to a custom foam insert anytime.
When should I replace my case foam?
Foam should be replaced if you notice any of the following:
- Permanent compression or flattening (the gear no longer feels snug)
- Tears, missing chunks, or crumbling edges
- Mold, mildew, or a musty odor from moisture exposure
- Gear shifting or rattling when you move the case
Worn foam reduces protection and can let gear impact the hard shell. If you’re unsure, send photos and your case model and we’ll advise: Contact Us.
Waterproof & Durability
Are your cases waterproof?
Most of the cases we sell are waterproof, dustproof, and even submersible. Always check the product page for the specific IP rating and test standard for that model. If you need help choosing the right waterproof level, just ask us.
What do IP ratings mean?
IP ratings describe dust + water protection:
- IP67 = dust-tight + submersible up to about 1 meter for 30 minutes.
- IP68 = dust-tight + deeper/longer submersion (manufacturer-specific).
- IP65/IP66 = strong water spray resistance, not intended for full submersion.
If you’re using your case around water frequently, go IP67 or higher.
Do your cases float?
Yes — everything we sell will float under normal loads. Because the cases displace more water than they weigh, they naturally stay buoyant. Heavily loaded cases may float lower, so always test if you’re carrying unusually dense gear.
If you need your case to float with something unusually heavy inside… let us know. We’ve tested weirder things.
How can I calculate buoyancy?
You can calculate buoyancy using Archimedes’ Principle: a case will float if the water it displaces weighs more than the case + gear inside it.
Buoyancy Formula:
Buoyant Force = ρ × V × g Where: ρ = density of water (~62.4 lb/ft³) V = volume of water displaced (ft³) g = gravitational constant (included in 62.4)
🔍 Real-world example
Suppose your case displaces about 1.2 ft³ of water when fully submerged.
Step 1 — Calculate buoyant force:
Buoyant Force = 62.4 lb/ft³ × 1.2 ft³ Buoyant Force ≈ 74.9 lbs
Step 2 — Compare to loaded case weight:
- Empty case: 10 lbs
- Gear inside: 25 lbs
- Total weight: 35 lbs
74.9 lbs (buoyant force) is greater than 35 lbs (actual weight), so the case will float. You could add roughly another 20–30 lbs before buoyancy becomes a concern.

Why does my case have a pressure valve?
Pressure valves equalize air pressure when traveling through altitude changes (like flying or mountain use). That keeps your case easy to open and protects the gasket seal from stress.
How do rugged plastic cases compare to metal?
Plastic cases are usually the better choice for real-world gear protection:
- No denting or bending under impact
- No rust or corrosion
- Lighter weight for travel and shipping
- Better impact absorption due to flexible resins
- Easier to clean and maintain
If you tell us your use case, we’ll recommend the best resin and model: Contact Us.
Batteries & Electronics
Can I store lithium batteries inside a case?
Yes — as long as you store them safely:
- Cover or protect terminals so they can’t short
- Keep batteries separated (no loose metal touching)
- For long-term storage, keep lithium packs around 40–60% charge
If you’re storing multiple batteries, consider separate foam cavities or battery sleeves.
How do I protect electronics from moisture?
Even in waterproof cases, humidity can build up over time. The easiest prevention is adding a silica desiccant pack inside your case: Silica Desiccant Pack .
For long trips or storage, replace desiccant periodically and keep gear dry before sealing the case.
Is it safe to store electronics in foam long-term?
Yes, as long as everything is dry and batteries are removed or stored safely. Foam provides excellent support and impact isolation. For very long storage, add desiccant and avoid damp basements/garages.
Are lithium batteries allowed in checked luggage?
No. Most airlines require loose lithium batteries and power banks to stay in carry-on luggage. Installed batteries inside devices are often allowed in checked bags, but rules vary by airline.
TSA really doesn’t like surprises, so keeping batteries in your carry-on keeps everyone happier.
Panels & Customization
What custom options do you offer?
We specialize in building truly dialed-in cases. Custom options include:
- Precision-cut custom foam inserts
- Lid and base panels (plastic or aluminum)
- Waterproof passthroughs & connectors (USB-C, Ethernet/Cat6, power, etc.)
- Branding, engraving, and labeling
- Custom colors by manufacturer availability
If you can imagine the kit, we can build it.
Do you make custom-sized cases?
We’re glad you asked — this one causes a lot of confusion. When people see “custom cases” on our site, they sometimes assume it means “custom size cases.” These are two totally different things.
What we do every day is customized cases using existing case sizes — like custom foam inserts, panels, connectors, branding, custom colors, and full kit builds. This is fast, affordable, and how most customers get a perfectly fitted solution.
A true custom-sized case means designing an entirely new molded case size that does not currently exist. That requires new tooling, new molds, and manufacturer engineering. Because of that, it typically involves:
- Minimum orders in the thousands of units
- Tens of thousands of dollars in tooling/mold costs
- 3–12 months of design, samples, and production setup
This route is usually only practical for large OEM programs, medical/device rollouts, government contracts, or long-term high-volume projects.
The good news is we carry and source hundreds of existing case sizes across multiple manufacturers — so in almost every situation we can find a case that fits your gear once it’s paired with a custom foam insert.
If you truly have the volume, timeline, and budget for a custom-sized molded case, we can absolutely explore feasibility with our manufacturers. Start here and tell us about your application: Contact Us.
Can you add waterproof connectors?
Yes. We can integrate waterproof Cat6, USB, USB-C, power ports, and other passthrough connections into custom panels so your gear stays sealed while connected.
What do you need to quote a custom project?
To quote a custom case build, we typically need:
- Your gear list (everything going inside)
- Measurements for each item
- Photos or links to the gear (helpful for shape/details)
- Any case preference or size constraints
- Panel/connector needs (if any)
